The playful beachside activity of building sand castles takes a whole new meaning in the Florida Keys. Gather around and watch six professional sand artists compete for first place as they show off their innate skills and non-traditional creative artistry using the earth's bounty, while overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The International Sand Art Competition is back again this Thanksgiving weekend on the beautiful sandy beaches on Key West. Competitions begin the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving, so after you enjoy your turkey dinner, spend the weekend cheering on and encouraging your favorite artist as they build and construct masterpieces using only sand and water as their medium. Each entrant receives 15,000 pounds of sand, and can only use hand tools such as brushes, towels or small shovels to complete their piece. Enjoy some fun in the sun, live entertainment, delicious seafood, and cocktails on the beach as creative juices flow. Visitors can also participate in Mel Fisher's Treasure Dig for a chance to find authentic shipwreck treasure coins valued at $1,000. There will be designated areas for kids to practice their own sand castle skills, so bring the whole family to this free event. Judging will take place that Saturday with a beach bash to follow, so make sure you get out to the beach before hand. Santa Maria Suites are just steps away from this Key West tradition, perfect for all ages.
